The Prairie is a novel by James Fenimore Cooper, the third novel written by him featuring Natty Bumppo. His fictitious frontier hero Bumppo is never called by his name, but is instead referred to as "the trapper" or "the old man." Chronologically The Prairie is the fifth and final installment of the Leatherstocking Tales, though it was published before The Pathfinder (1840) and The Deerslayer (1841). It depicts Natty in the final year of his life still proving helpful to people in distress on the American frontier. The book frequently references characters and events from the two books previously published in the Leatherstocking Tales as well as the two which Cooper wouldn’t write for more than ten years. Continuity with The Last of the Mohicans is indicated by the appearance of the grandson of Duncan and Alice Heyward, as well as the noble Pawnee chief Hard Heart, whose name is English for the French nickname for the Delaware, le Coeur-dur.

It is such a pleasure to read high, British, formal language. The British influence was felt for a long time in the American colonies among the more learned class of which James Fenimore Cooper was. I search for books written like this. Now I plan to read all of Cooper's books. I have to read it with a dictionary and am pleased to be learning all kinds of new words. Cooper can really craft a scene and make you feel like you are right there. But the book that was sent to me doesn't have this cover. Mine just has a buffalo on it. But this minor incongruity is fine with me.Product details

The Prairie James Fenimore Cooper Yasmira Cedeno Books Reviews
It's not easy reading but staying with it is worth the story
Gives one a good window into the early American life. A little slow going--but well worth the effort.
truly great book
On my . Greta way to read some of my favorite books.

J. F. Cooper is one of my favorite authors. I felt like rating this lower because it is so hard to read. There may be copies out there that are more modern and easier to read. I had a copy of the Last of the Mohicans that seemed easier to read. It is my favorite story. A higher educated person may not have had the problem with this book like I had. But I'm sure some of my friends would have been lost at times in the story. The story kept you wondering what was going to happen next. Really and enjoyable story. Suggest the Pathfinder.
Another great novel from J. F. C. However, should one not be a sailing enthusiast, some parts when dealing with the technology and ships of the early 19th Century, may be more difficult to understand. But don't be put off by that, the story is great and Fennimore Cooper's very correct English and his play with French and Italian a delight.
